Crude Oil Enhanced Recovery (EOR)

In today's oil production, increasing oil reservoir pressure can be achieved by water injection, acid gas injection or both.

Acid gas from a sweetening facility that contains 85% CO2 and 15% Water + Methane gas are circulated and injected at high pressure back into the oil reservoir. Acid gas makeup of roughly 5-8 % of total EOR obtained from gas sweetening system can replace the portion of the EOR gas that is lost in the reservoir and dissolved in the produced oil.

EOR injection rate is estimated based on unit displacement efficiency and practically ranges between 230 - 280 std m3 gas/barrel oil.

Water injection into oil reservoir will always require filtration and biociding, de-oxygenation before injection.

The high pressure, high flow water injection pumps are placed near to the de-oxygenation tower and boosting pumps. They fill the bottom of the reservoir with the filtered water to push the oil towards the wells like a piston. The result of the injection is not quick; it needs time. Water injection is used to prevent low pressure in the reservoir. The water replaces the oil that has been taken, keeping the production rate and the pressure the same over the long term. For example, if the water injection is stopped for a day, the production rate is not changed, unlike with gas lifts. Gas lifts are the opposite; if the injection is interrupted, the production will stop immediately because the gas lifts have only a short term effect.

Gas Plant Design

From upstream gas gathering, phase separation, dehydration and sweetening modules to condensate and natural gas liquid processing, we at ATRA Engineering Inc. provide clients worldwide with quality design , installation and safe operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas liquid (NGL) recovery facilities, including loading and off-loading platforms.

Railcar Offloading and Storage Terminal

Tank Railcar is an efficient system for carrying heavy loads over long distances. One rail car can carry 110 tonnes, about four times what a truck can carry. Canada's rail freight industry is made up of two major companies, Canadian National Railways and Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and some 50 smaller ones

Shipping crude and heavy oil via railcars became quicker and cheaper than pipelines, with only a 12-14 days' trip from Alberta to Texas. One train, consisting of 120 railcars, can transport 72,000 barrels of oil in one trip, and 4 (four) rail tracks can support shipping capacity up to 300,000 barrels per day.

Rail car unloading

ATRA Engineering Inc (AEI) is experienced in design and expansion of large crude terminals (loading/offloading and storage).

Our Design Knowledge Encompasses the Following Critical Areas:

  • Track Layout
  • Railcar Steam Flow & Heating Time Calculations
  • Railcar Cooling Water Flow Calculation
  • Loading & Offloading Station Design
